We get often get asked to tow a shed from one location in Utah, to another. If a shed is small, towing it can be relatively simple operation and some do-it-yourself types like to attempt the task themselves. However, if the shed is large, the tow can be complex.
One of the first things you’ll need to do is to prepare the new location for the shed. To protect your shed from Utah’s harsh climate, prepare the location before you tow. Have the foundation prepared to withstand the harsh freeze-thaw cycles of our weather, so that the shed won’t shift or list over time.
For a foundation, you have several options:
A foundation of crushed stone. First remove the top few inches of sod or soil from an area slightly larger than the intended shed pad. Level the site by removing dirt where necessary, and spread ¾” crushed stone to a depth of 3” or 4”. Tamp the stone down with a piece of 4-by-4 or metal tamper until the site area is flat and level. The pad should be 1’ larger all the way around than the shed. For example, a 10’ x 14’ building would require a crushed stone pad of at least 12’ x 16’. This allowance gives better drainage around the shed for rain/snow melt dripping off the eaves.
A concrete slab foundation. A level concrete slab between 3” – 4” thick. Like the crushed stone pad, this should be at least a foot larger than the shed in length and width, to protect the walls of the shed from drips and splashes.
Setting the shed on a foundation of patio blocks. Many homeowners in Utah find this to be the easiest and most economical option. Place 2” thick, 8” x16” patio blocks on the four corners of the shed. Set the shed on level ground nearby, with jacks set underneath. Next, raise the shed up on the jacks and place the patio blocks under the corners of the shed. The shed is then lowered on to the patio blocks and the jacks are removed. Note: It is important to use patio blocks, not cinder blocks.
A foundation of cement pillars. Some municipalities require sheds to be placed on cement pillars, with or without tie-downs.
